In short

A song of praise from David, when the Ark of the Covenant finally got to its destination.

Why it is important

Some legendary and memorable lines are in this (these) poem(s); you may recognize a few lyrics to songs we sing today.

What is in this poem

This poem actually crams part or most of three psalms together:

  • The first 1/3 of Psalm 105
  • Almost all of Psalm 96
  • And a small portion of Psalm 106 (parts of verses 1, 47 and 48)
  • In that order – it’s not rearranged at all

There are a few differences between 1 Chronicles 16 and the Psalms, but I think less than five. Assuming that the Psalms were the original text, the poem in Chronicles is what today we might call a medley, where a verse or two of some well-known songs are strung together as a single performance.

I outlined the poem in sections (see picture), following the ESV’s structure (but in KJV).

The refrain or theme of the poem is “tell of the LORD’s greatness.” The 1st, 4th and last (6th) sections have this theme – basically corresponding to the transitions between Psalms.

Theology and doctrine

Nothing groundbreaking in these words. Just the classic reminder to remember all that God has done.
