In short
Seeking the blessings of the LORD and knowing that only His blessings will bring success.
Why it is important
I chose this psalm for this week because of the ties to the book of Joshua, especially the famous cry, “But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD,” Josh 24:15.
Apart from that, this is one of 15 “Songs of Ascents.” (Psalms 120-134.) Your Bible will give them each that title, “A Song of Ascents.” Those headings are actually part of the Bible – it’s not like the headings that the publisher adds. What it means is not for certain, but the common belief is that they were sung on the way “up” to Jerusalem for one reason or another.
What is in this poem
It is only five verses, but there are two distinct parts.
- Verses 1-2 – Only the LORD can grant success
- Verses 3-5 – The blessing of having many children
But the part about children makes the same point as the first half – blessings come because of God. Verse 3, “children are a heritage from the LORD.”
Theology and doctrine
It is a blessing to be able to have many children. There was a time that people believed that.
The text
Psalm 127; A Song of Ascents. Of Solomon.
(1) Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.
(2) It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep.
(3) Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward.
(4) Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth.
(5) Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.
